The Downeast-style boat has long been a favorite among experienced boaters. The early 1990s saw the introduction of Legacy Yachts through Freedom Yachts in Rhode Island, a builder of high-quality sailing yachts. The first Legacy models were a 40’ Downeast yacht designed by Mark Ellis and a 28’ lobster-style day boat, both built for speed, performance, and efficiency. As the boats gained popularity, Legacy emerged as a leading force in the boating industry until the global economic recession of 2008.
Adversity brought opportunity, leading to the acquisition of Legacy Yachts in 2010 by an esteemed sailing yacht builder, who then relocated production to their state-of-the-art factory in Fairport Harbor, Ohio. This move provided access to top-quality materials and innovative design and construction techniques, enabling the Legacy brand to achieve a higher level of quality. Today, the Tartan factory offers three Legacy models: The 42, 36, and 32.
