The Largest Yacht in the World: Azzam

When it comes to private yachts, Azzam holds the prestigious title of being the largest in the world. This magnificent vessel, registered under the United Arab Emirates flag, was built by the Lürssen shipyard in Germany for Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan of Abu Dhabi's royal family. Measuring an astonishing 592 feet, 6 inches long and boasting a gross tonnage of 13136.0 GT, Azzam has been the reigning champion in the world of yachting since its delivery to the owner in October 2013.

The Construction of Azzam

Constructing Azzam was no small feat. It required a year of engineering and three years of construction, involving over 4,000 workers who dedicated more than 6 million man-hours to the project. The magnitude of this endeavor is evidenced by reports that suggest if a single person had built the yacht, they would have had to start in 1737BC. This gigayacht also comes with a staggering price tag of over US$500 million.

The Engineering Marvel

Engineer and principal designer Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi spearheaded the creation of Azzam with a vision of a vessel that could swiftly transport its passengers to the owner’s private island off the coast of Abu Dhabi. This ambitious goal led to the collaboration of a team of designers and engineers, resulting in the development of what could arguably be the most intricate superyacht ever. The outcome was a well-proportioned and sleek yacht with a long and lean shape, embodying elegance and balance.

Design and Features

Despite its initial design as a smaller vessel, Azzam was optimized to comfortably accommodate up to 36 guests and a crew of 80, ultimately leading to its current remarkable length. The superyacht is constructed with an aluminum superstructure, a steel hull, and a teak deck. Detailed finite element analysis (FEA) was employed to ensure the necessary longitudinal strength. The exterior design, crafted by Nauta Yacht Design, showcases modern architecture characterized by straight lines and well-proportioned volumes, resulting in a sleek appearance with a long, sweeping bow and a swept-back stern.

Impressive Capabilities

One of the most remarkable features of Azzam is its remarkable speed. It utilizes an innovative water-jet propulsion system with gas turbine-powered fixed and directional jets, enabling it to reach speeds of over 30 knots. Additionally, the yacht is equipped with two conventional diesel engines, allowing for extended range and the capability to cross the Atlantic Ocean without the need for refueling. Azzam's shallow draft further enables it to operate at high speeds in shallow waters, showcasing its exceptional engineering and design.

Exploring the Interior of the Largest Yacht in the World

Delving into the interior of the largest yacht in the world, Azzam, reveals a world of luxury and opulence shrouded in secrecy. French designer Christophe Leoni, known for his work on the owner's palaces and residences, spearheaded the creation of the interior style, infusing it with a heritage-inspired aesthetic.

The interior of Azzam is described by Lürssen as "inspired by the Empire style of the early 19th century." This influence is evident in the intricate veneering of numerous wood furniture pieces with mother of pearl marquetry. The sheer amount of mother of pearl used on the furniture is estimated to match a year's worth of worldwide production. However, the majority of the interior design details remain closely guarded and undisclosed.

One of the standout features of the yacht is its 95-foot-long main salon, exuding a relaxed French Empire style. The absence of pillars in this space ensures unobstructed views, while the 1-meter-wide ceiling beams support the design. The main salon is adorned with full-height windows, offering an expansive vista of the surroundings. To withstand the elements, the specially engineered Italian glass for the windows is over 7 centimeters thick and fully stormproof.

Efforts to minimize noise and vibration levels during high-speed travel were paramount. The chandelier in the main salon underwent rigorous testing to ensure it remained steady while the yacht was in motion. Additionally, Azzam boasts onboard amenities such as a gym, a pool, and a dedicated golf training room for passengers to hone their swing skills.

Some of the Largest Yachts in the World
